Instrumental music is offered as an elective academic subject to students in the fourth and fifth grades. Students are taught to play an instrument, to read music and to understand basic music theory. Instruction is offered on flute, clarinet, saxophone, trumpet, trombone, violin, viola and cello. It is the responsibility of the families to acquire an instrument. Students receive two group lessons per week throughout the year. The students also meet as a full band or orchestra once a week and present a winter concert, a spring concert and a "Concert on the Green" to culminate the year.
Some of Sandburg music students audition, get accepted and participate in honor bands. Sandburg has the best music program in the school district.
