Good Evening Sandburg Tiger Families!

It is hard to believe that today is the last week of the school year! We are so proud of all of the hard work and progress of our Sandburg Tigers. Thank you for entrusting us with your children and being our partners in education this year. We hope you all have an amazing summer and look forward to seeing most of you next year!

I wanted to share a special congratulations to Mr. Clyde, Ms. Bringas and Dr. Weiner on their upcoming retirements. Thank you for your many years of dedication to our Sandburg students, families and community. We wish you all the best and some well-deserved relaxation time in your retirement!

Please remember that there is no school tomorrow in honor of Memorial Day. This holiday is celebrated to honor and mourn the military personnel who had died while serving in the United States Armed Forces. We look forward to seeing you all as we return to school on Tuesday for our last 3 days of the 2024-2025 school year.

2025-2026 Sandburg DRAFT Calendar

Attached HERE is the DRAFT Sandburg Calendar for the 2025-2026 school year. This calendar is a DRAFT and it is likely that some events or meetings could change. Please look at this calendar closely as you schedule any vacations during the 2025-2026 school year. Any trip you schedule needs to be during the scheduled school breaks. They are highlighted in red on the attached calendar. One change that you will notice is that our additional modified days that were previously scheduled on Wednesdays are now scheduled on Fridays. This was due to community input in regards to getting care for students midweek.

2025-2026 Sandburg Attendance Policy

Sandburg is in the “moderate” range for chronic absenteeism on the California Dashboard so we are required to take steps to improve our attendance rate. The State of California classifies students who have missed more than 10% of the school days as “chronic absentees.” Due to increased absences, requests for Independent Study Contracts and rate of chronic absenteeism, we are instituting a written attendance policy. We have attached the policy below so that you can refer to it as you make plans for the 2025-2026 school year. It will be included in our first week packet to be signed and returned for all students and families.

Good Evening Sandburg Tiger Families!

I cannot believe that we have only 18 days left of the school year. The days have been flying by since we returned from Spring Break! During the next two weeks, our 3rd-5th graders will be participating in State Testing. It is extremely important that our 3rd-5th grade students are on time every day, get lots of rest and eat a healthy breakfast. If students are late on a testing day, they have to stay in the office until their class is finished testing. They then have to participate in make up testing and will miss out on other activities in their classroom.

During the month of May we are also celebrating Asian American Pacific Islander Heritage Month. AAPI month is observed to celebrate the roles, achievements and contributions of those of AAPI heritage, history, and culture in the United States. This month aims to pay tribute to the generations of Asian and Pacific Islanders who have enhanced America's history and to recognize the importance of AAPI peoples' presence in its future success. May was designated as AAPI Month to honor the first Japanese immigrants to the United States, who arrived on May 7, 1843, per the Asian/Pacific Heritage Month website. Additionally, it also celebrates the anniversary of the completion of the transcontinental railroad on May 10, 1869. The majority of the workers who helped complete the railroad were Chinese immigrants.

2024/2025 Attendance and New Attendance Policy

We are continuing to have a large number of contract requests and absences. We understand that travel is important to families, but we urge you to schedule these vacations during our school breaks. Independent student contracts do not replace the teaching and learning that is missed. In addition, we are continuing to have large numbers of illness absences and want to remind everyone that students can attend school if they are fever free and free of vomiting/diarrhea without medication for 24 hours.

Due to the large number of contracts and absences, we are in the process of updating our absence and contract policy for 2025-2026. We will send out a copy as soon as it is finalized and it will be in the first week folder and require signature. In order to assist you in planning, the academic calendar for 2025-2026 is attached HERE.

Good Evening Sandburg Tiger Families!

Happy Ramadan to all you celebrate in our Sandburg community. For the hundreds of millions of Muslims around the world who observe Ramadan, the month is a time to focus on their faith and also perform generous acts. People raise money and donate supplies to help others in need. And many fast to remind themselves about those in the world who don’t have enough to eat. If your child will be celebrating Ramadan with fasting, please reach out to your child’s teacher and we can make adjustments to their schedule, as needed. Sandi Coast Cafe will offer “grab & go meals” to San Diego Unified students fasting during Ramadan to promote nutrition security, health equity, and to ensure children have access to the nutrition they need. Meals (breakfast & lunch) will be available for pickup at the end of each school day. The initiative will be effective February 24 through March 28, 2025. Interested families must complete a request form

Good Evening Sandburg Tiger Families!

Did you know February is Black History Month? Although the histories, stories, and voices of Black people should be centered, honored, and uplifted in school every day, February is a time to draw attention to their many amazing accomplishments and contributions to our country. Black History Month is celebrated to honor and recognize the significant contributions and achievements of African Americans throughout history, highlighting important figures and events that are often overlooked in society. As we celebrate Black History Month, we promote awareness and understanding of Black culture and experiences across various areas like politics, science, arts, and activism; it is a time to celebrate the legacy of Black people in the United States. Sandburg Sunday Message 2/2/2025

Good Evening Sandburg Tiger Families!

Happy Lunar New Year to all you celebrate! Lunar New Year is a festival celebrated in many Asian countries. It is also called Spring Festival. The lunar calendar is based on the cycles of the moon, so the dates of the holiday vary slightly from year to year. The new year begins sometime between January 21 and February 20 according to Western calendars. The festivals last for 15 days. This year we celebrate the year of the Wooden Snake.

Thank you to everyone that made rocks for the memorial rock gard to honor and remember Mrs. Leong! Even once the rock garden is set up, you can always make additional rocks to add to it. Mrs. Leong’s family has shared information about the Celebration of Life they have planned. The family is honored to have anyone come celebrate Kelly who had the opportunity to have that special connection with her.

Midyear Parking and Traffic Reminders

Due to an increase in unsafe conditions during arrival and pick-up, we wanted to remind you of a few things.

  1. There are NO U-TURNS allowed along Avenida del Gato in front of any part of the Sandburg campus. There are NO U-TURN signs at the north and south ends of the campus. It is extremely unsafe and blocks traffic.

  2. Although jaywalking may not be illegal, it is extremely unsafe, especially during busy dropoff and pick up times. Please take an extra few steps and set a good example for your children by crossing at the crosswalk.

  3. Students should only be picked up along the curb in our loading zone. Please do not have your child load while you are double parked and in the traffic lane. This is extremely unsafe!

During February and March, we will be piloting the SDUSD Core Academy Program on February 22, March 1, March 8 and March 22, from 8:00 AM - 12:00 PM. This is a weekend enrichment program that allows students to have fun participating in educational enrichment activities and make-up absences. It also helps Sandburg and SDUSD generate funds that were lost when students missed school. The permission slip for Core Academy was previously sent to all students who had 4 or more absences. We are now opening enrollment to other students. Enrollment priority will be given to those students with absences, as there is limited space in the program. Attached below is the permission slip for Core Academy. If you are interested in your child attending Core Academy, please return the permission slip to your child’s teacher or the font office ASAP. There are also printed permission slips available in the office.

Sandburg Sunday Message 1/26/2025

Good Evening Sandburg Tiger Families!

This coming week our Sandburg Tigers are participating in the Great Kindness Challenge. In the world today, kindness can be so powerful as we navigate our lives alongside people who are different from us. They may look different, have different abilities, speak a different language or act differently. When we walk through life with a focus on kindness, no matter who we are interacting with, we make this world a better and kinder place. Below you will find a video to kickoff the Great Kindness Challenge Week and a checklist that you and your tigers can use to practice kindness all week long and beyond!

Sandburg Sunday Message 1/12/2025

Good Evening Sandburg Tiger Families!

Can you believe that we are over halfway done with the school year? Tomorrow will be day 92! The school year is flying by. As we  approach the second half of the school year, we are looking forward to seeing the progress our students are making and they prepare for the next grade level. We are still seeing a large number of absences and requests for independent study contracts.  Attached below are the calendars for this school year and next school year. This school year ends on Thursday, May 29th and the 2025-2026 school year begins on Monday, August 11th. Please plan summer vacation plans around these dates.

2024-25 School Year Calendar

2025-26 School Year Calendar

Martin Luther King, Jr. Day

Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. 's Birthday is coming up on January 15th and school will be closed on January 20th to honor his legacy. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. believed in equality for all people, solving disagreements peacefully and throughout his life worked in service to other people. As we approach this holiday to honor him, we invite all of you to find ways to honor his legacy by serving other people, solving disagreements peacefully and making sure everyone is treated fairly and included no matter their differences.

Sandburg Site Safety Plan

In lieu of the recent Los Angeles County Fires, we have had some parents asking about our site Emergency Procedures. Attached HERE is the public version of our Site Safety Plan that was shared earlier this school year. There is a much more detailed Confidential Site Safety Plan because there are certain parts of the plan that are not public due to maintaining site safety and security. Some of the most important things parents can do are ensure the office always has your most up to date contact information (address, phone number, email and emergency contacts) and remind your children to listen to school staff in case of emergency. If an emergency were to occur, do not come directly to school, as that can interfere with emergency response. Keep an eye on your phone/computer for phone calls, emails or texts from the school to inform you of next steps. Students and staff do practice what to do in an emergency during monthly emergency drills (fire, earthquake, lockdown and shelter in place).

Good Evening Sandburg Tiger Families!

Happy New Year to all of our Sandburg Tiger students, families and staff! I hope you have all had a wonderful Winter Break and I am looking forward to a great second half of our 2024-2025 school year!

Prior to Winter Break, we had a large decrease in our daily attendance due to extended vacations and illness. Please plan all future vacations during our school holidays and ensure all appointments are scheduled outside of school hours. Students should be kept home if they are not fever-free and stomach flu free without medication for 24 hours. If you are unsure if your child should attend school, please feel free to contact our school office at 619-605-4700.
